Assisted Suicide is Legal

2025—LD 613 allows an attending physician to waive a portion or all of a waiting period for qualified patients to access end-of-life medication based on the qualified patient’s condition and the attending physician’s medical opinion regarding the “best interests of the qualified patient.” It initially passed the House, but was voted down by the Senate. After an amendment to change the proposed reduction of waiting period to be no less than 7 days, it passed both chambers and was signed by the governor on June 20.

2019—LD 1313 (HP 948), "An Act To Enact the Maine Death with Dignity Act," narrowly passed both legislative chambers and was signed into law in June, 2019. Law text can be found here.
